October is designated as ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Month’. So our Art League gallery committee of which I am a member decided to hold an art show dedicated to the womanly figure(Form de Femme) and to ask artists to create bras that would be auctioned off at the reception. When this project was first introduced, I was surprised. I had never heard of such a project but soon learned that many art leagues have held such a show with positive results.
Planning how to decorate, paint and create a bra around a theme was very difficult for me to do. It took weeks to come up with an idea and then several weeks to find materials to use that went with that theme. Other artists attempting such a project have expressed frustration with this project. It is so different from what traditional artists usually do. I will have a much better idea about how to create a bra as art next time I try it.
This is the bra that I am submitting for the Bras For Life fundraiser which will be held on October 5th at the Marco Island Art League. I was amazed to find the Roman style gold coins in the sewing/craft division of our local Walmart which I attached to the bottom of the bra. The trim on the top of the bra was gathered and then sewed to the straps and top. Then I had to find a picture of Cleopatra and Mark Anthony to use to help me paint them on the cups of the bra. Lastly, I sewed gold stars along the edge of the bra, front and back. The bras will be juried so I hope mine is accepted into the show.
It should be fun seeing the variety of bra creations which other artists have done. A minimum price of $75 is the starting bid. A portion of the sales will be given to Susan G. Koenig Breast Cancer Agency to help fight breast cancer. If successful, it may become an annual event. We will see what happens next week! Wish us luck!
